National Youth Championships Info. Finally!

Last week, USA Weightlifting finally announced where the National Youth Championships will be held.  This comes just three months prior to when the meet is scheduled to occur.  Dearborn, Michigan is the new site, and it will run from June 22 until the 24th.  Beyond that, there is no other information yet, but at least we now know the location and have official dates.

Qualifying totals were also released.  They remain the same as the Q-totals for 2011.  This is true for all weight classes and age groups.  However, two new weight classes were added for the 16-17 age groups.  The classes were added on to the lightest end of the lineups, with the 50kg class for men, and 44kg class for women.

Hopefully more details will be coming soon.  For now, here all we have:

State Meet Results

The Minnesota High School Weightlifting State Championships were held this past weekend, and the meet was a huge

success. For the first time ever, the meet was held at Inver Hills Community College, and Rosemount coach Brian Trussel did an outstanding job serving as meet director.

In total, there were 77 lifters who competed, representing 12 different schools. By the end of the day there were many fantastic performances, from both individuals and teams, highlighted by three new high school state records.

In the varsity boys 77kg weight class, Cannon Falls lifter Trevor Sullivan set a new record in the snatch with 107 kilos.

The record was formerly held by Zach Krych, who has been training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for the past few years, and is one of the top weightlifters in the US.

In the junior varsity division, Alex Seuser, from Albert Lea, set records in the 94+ weight class in both the snatch and total. Alex shattered the previous snatch record with 100 kilos.  After the clean & jerk, Alex totaled 227kg, establishing a new state record.

Looking at the final team scores, Northfield’s varsity continued its dominance, winning their 6th straight team title scoring a whopping 60 points.  Cannon Falls was a distant 2nd, scoring 23 points, edging out Lakeville South’s 18 points.   On the JV side, Cannon Falls won their 4th straight team title, with a state meet all-time high, 50 team points.    Northfield was second with 30 points.  And New-comer Burnsville comes in third, scoring 14.

Complete results can be found on the Minnesota High School Weightlifting website.  Congratulations to all lifters and coaches on another successful season!

Last Chance Meet Results

The final two regular season meets were held this past weekend in Caledonia and Lakeville.    This was the last chance to qualify for the state meet, and several lifters did just that.  For those who had already qualified, this was a great chance to try some big attempts to prepare for the state meet in three weeks.   Overall, 39 athletes competed in Caledonia, and another 82 lifted in Lakeville.  Caledonia meet results can be found here.  Lakeville meet results can be found here.  They can also be found on the Minnesota High School Weightlifting website in other formats too.

Entry Forms Available

All entry forms for the remaining meets of the 2012 season are now available to download on the website.  Two last chance meets will be held on February 18th.  Those meets will be held at Caledonia High School and at Kenwood Trail Middle School in Lakeville.  The state meet will be held on March 10th, for those who qualify.

Kendrick Farris Details

Here is the official info.  Kendrick Farris will be speaking at the MN NSCA Winter Clinic this coming Saturday at the U of MN, in the Bierman building.  Check-in/registration begins at 7:30 AM with the State Director, Ryan Johnson (Wayzata High) opening the Clinic at 8:00 AM.  Kendrick is scheduled to speak from 8:15-10:00 AM, and again from 2:30-4:00 PM.  For those of you who are not members of the NSCA, I encourage you to join, or renew your memberships – however a special clinic rate has been authorized for our USAW group in MN.  This is an incredible opportunity for our Group to have access to an Olympian, as well as American Record holder.  Coaches bringing Athletes will have access for $20 for the morning session and $30 for both of Kendrick’s sessions.  Each athlete you bring will be $10 each if they show their USAW card (Coaches also).  Chris Rousemiller is the guy to contact with questions regarding this opportunity – and he will be at the check-in table on Saturday.  We hope to see as many of you on Saturday as possible.

Southern Minnesota Results

The second regular season meet is now in the books, and what a meet it was!  Nearly 130 lifters showed up in Cannon Falls on Saturday to compete in what is one of the biggest meets in the country.  Results have now been posted on the website.  The 2012 rankings, through two meets, and also been posted.  You can find those here.  If anyone has pictures or videos that you would like to share on the website, blog, and/or Facebook page, please send them to smeier@farmington.k12.mn.us.

Kendrick Farris Presentation

If you want a chance to see America’s best weightlifter, come to the Minnesota-NSCA State Clinic on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the University of Minnesota.  Olympian and American Record Holder Kendrick Farris is the keynote speaker at this year’s clinic.  There will be more details to come shortly, it looks like a 8:30 speak time and if a coach brings down an athlete for the day – it will be a $10 cost if they show their USAW card.  Stay tuned…

Southern Minnesota Entry Form

The entry form for the Southern MN High School Open meet has now been posted on the website.  You can also download it HERE.  This is the second meet of the 2011-2012 high school season.  It is being held in the new fieldhouse at Cannon Falls High School on Saturday, January 14th.  After the success of last year’s first ever three-platform meet, it will be returning again for 2012!  All JV lifters will compete starting at 9:00am, with the Varsity athletes scheduled for 12:00 noon.  The entry deadline is Jan 9th.  Don’t miss out on competing in this outstanding high school event!

National Junior Qualifier

If you are close to qualifying for the USAW National Junior Championships, you have another chance to get your required qualifying total.  Team Spartacus will be hosting a small meet at noon 10:00am on Dec 31, for those lifters who are close to getting their Q-total.  Because 2012 is an Olympic year, the USAW national competition schedule gets changed to adjust for the trials and the Olympic Games themselves.  This will be the last opportunity to get a Q-total for the junior meet.  You won’t be able to qualify at any other high school season meets, like most years in the past.  Please contact Brian Derwin at AEDERWIN@yahoo(dot)com if you are interested in competing or for more information.

South Metro Results

The results from the South Metro Meet held in Northfield on Saturday have been posted on the Minnesota High School Weightlifting website.  There were some impressive lifts, and it was great to see the new-comers as well.  And a special thanks to all referees and meet workers who volunteered their time!

Updated Blog

While I like how the new website has turned out, I have been disappointed with the blog feature part of the software I’ve been using.  It is very basic and I have found some major limitations after using it for the past few months.  As a result, I have moved the blog to WordPress instead.  WordPress is one of the biggest blog hosts in the world, and its tools and capabilities are much greater than what was available before, using the website software.  One of the major improvements is that there can be multiple contributors to the blog.  If you are interested in blogging and want to add to our content, just let me know.  All you need to do is register with WordPress, and then send me the e-mail address that you registered with.  I can then add you as an author for our blog.

A Record Setting Day

The Southern Minnesota High School Open, that was held in Cannon Falls on the 15th, was a record setter in itself.  It was the first ever 3-platform meet held in Minnesota.  There is also a very good chance that it will be the biggest single-day meet in the country thus year, with over 150 lifters competing.

Besides this, there were also two individual high school state records set at the meet.  Madasyn Hofstedt (Cannon Falls) established a new junior varsity record in the clean & jerk, in the 69kg weight class.  Madasyn successfully lifted 68kg and 70kg in her first two attempts.  The old record, as it stood, was at 72.5kg, so Madasyn made a three kilo jump on her final attempt to try to beat the record.  It was a great lift and she moves the new record to 73kg.  The previous record was held by former Cannon Falls lifter Cori Safe, who still holds 11 state high school records.

In the varsity division, Collin Fossum (Lakeville South) also set a new clean & jerk state record in the 94kg weight class.  Collin opened with a good lift at 138kg, but missed his second attempt at 143.  Having already won the weight class, he moved to 148 on his final attempt, to try to break the record, which was previously held by Paul Gronvall (Red Wing) at 147.5kg.  Collin had a great lift and pushed the new record to 148.

2011 Southern Minnesota Open

A message from Scott Safe, meet director and Cannon Falls coach:

I must say that this was a National level effort by everyone involved.  Hats off to all of you everybody!  154 lifters from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa on 3 platforms!!!!  We had all Junior Varsity lifters go at 9:00 am and we had all Varsity lifters go at 12:00.  We finished lifting at 3:30 pm.   I can tell you for a fact that the national office is not going to believe we pulled that off in 6.5 hours.  Just a fantastic effort.   Pretty incredible what a bunch of folks can accomplish if they work together.   I am very thankful to have a group like you guys to work with.  Have a great day!

Scott

Reminders for the Cannon Falls Meet

Here are a few things from meet director Scott Safe:

Just a couple of notes for the upcoming Cannon meet.

1.        * Please fill out entry forms completely.  It is best if you (the coach) personally check them before they are mailed.

2.      *  Weight classes need to be entered

3.       * Birth dates need to be entered.

4.       * Please note to Schoolage lifters(JV) That after Jan 1st, they may now be a Junior lifter.  (all 1994 birthdates)

5     We are going to enforce the weigh in rules at this meet. So, if a lifter registers in a weight class and does not make weight, they can still lift, but as an extra.  I know on the first meet, a lot of lifters struggle with this, but by the 2nd meet, they should have a handle on their weight class.

As always, the earlier the better on entry forms. (www.mnweightlifting.org)  If you are going to mail them late, send me an email with the lifters name, weight class AND DATE OF BIRTH ahead of time.  This helps us organize who will be lifting on which platform.   Also, please enter the middle school or high school you are presently attending.  I am still in need of some referees.  Otherwise, things are coming together nicely.  Remember, all JV-Schoolage Lifters lift at 9:00 am.  ALL Varsity-Junior lifters lift at 12:00.  We are excited to give this a go and hope to have a fun meet.  Let me know if questions and see you on the 15th!  Thanks and have a great day!

Qualifying For The State Meet

A written policy is now in place in regards to qualifying for the state meet, and provides more specific wording when it comes to changing weight classes.
*New Policy: In order to compete at the State Meet in a weight class, an athlete must have posted a qualifying total in that weight class in one of the 3 qualifying meets.  The only exception is where an athlete has a qualifying total for a higher class, and moves to a higher weight class without totaling in that class. That athlete must weigh enough to compete in the class at weigh-ins.  Any weight class move must be declared to the Meet Director before weigh-ins begin for the session that athlete is competing in.  Weight class changes for the State Meet must be declared at least one day before the meet, to allow time for verification of entries.  This policy will be reviewed annually.

These are basically the same rules as what are used when changing weight classes at national meets. For those of you who might be new to the sport, here is how it works.  Let’s use the varsity boys 77kg and 85kg weight classes as an example.  The qualifying total for the state meet for a 77kg lifter is 181kg, and the q-total for 85 is 191kg.  Let’s say our lifter, Joe Strong, weighs 76.5kg at the Northfield meet.  He ends up finishing the meet with a total of 195kg.  Joe has hit the qualifying standard for his 77kg weight class, but has also hit the standard for the 85kg weight class.  He is eligible to compete in either weight class now at the state meet.
However, if he decides to move up to 85, he must have a body weight that is at least 77.1kg.  In weightlifting up must compete in the weight class that you weigh-in at (this is not like wrestling where you can move up weight classes if you want to, regardless of your body weight).  If he stays at his previous weight of 76.5, he will be too light for 85, and will have to lift at the 77 weight class (the most he could weigh and stay at 77 is 77.0kg).  Joe’s coach must also declare the change in weight class, before weigh-ins start for his lifting session at the state meet.  In other words, Joe cannot register at 77, weigh-in and find out he weights 78kg, and then say “Oh, now I want to change and lift at 85kg”.  It must be declared before weigh-ins begin.
Moving down a weight class is a little trickier.  Let’s say Joe’s twin brother Jeff weighs 78kg at all three qualifying meets.  His best total so far is 185kg.  He is 6kg short of what he needs to get into the state meet at 85.  Jeff though is over the required total for the 77kg weight class, and wants to move down to lift at the state meet.  This is not allowed.  In order to qualify at a lower weight class, Jeff needs to total over 181 in a meet, while actually being in the 77kg weight class.  You cannot lift at a higher weight class, and then use that total to qualify for a lighter weight class.  It doesn’t matter if he weighs 76.9 kg at the state meet.  He needed to weigh that when he qualified.
So if things were left like this, Joe Strong could lift at either weight class at the state meet, as long as he declares which class it will be, and he weighs-in at the correct weight.  Jeff Strong would not be eligible to lift at the state meet, in either weight class.
Hopefully this clears things up a little.  Your coaches can help explain this as well.  If you are a lifter with a body weight that is borderline between two weight classes, is not a bad idea to try to qualify for both.  It will allow you and your team a some flexibility at the state meet, and will give you the option of picking the class that would give you the best chance at a higher finishing place.

New Age Group Terminology

Several years ago, the IWF made a slight change in the age groups.  The “schoolage” age group was considered 16 years old & younger, while the “junior” age group was 17-20 years old.  The change increased school age to 17 & younger, making juniors 18-20.  USA Weightlifting then followed suit and changed the schoolage classification to 17 & under also.

In our high school meets in Minnesota however, we decided to keep schoolage at it’s original 16 and under, and junior age group at 17 and older.  It provided a much more even split in the number of lifters when it came to running meets.  Everyone was used to it at that point, so it was easy to just keep it the same.  The issue became some confusion, mainly for 17 year olds, when it came to qualifying for state meets and national meets.  They were competing as juniors here all season long, but still schoolage for nationals.  It also caused some errors in membership with USAW, and with national meet registrations.

This year, we are trying to fix the problem be re-naming the age groups for our high school meets.  The “Junior” age group will now be referred to as “Varsity”.  “Schoolage” will be known as “VJ” or “Junior Varsity”  This also puts weightlifting in line with other high school sports, in terms of levels kids are already familiar with.

Here is the decision as it comes from the minutes of the last coaches meeting:

MN Division changes:
To clear up some age division language, the following titles will be used for Minnesota High School Weightlifting:

MN School age, 16 and under, will be renamed: Junior Varsity or JV (16 and under)

MN Junior, 17 and above, will be renamed: Varsity (17 and over)
All sanctioned MN High School meets will use this language and all USAW meets will use standard age groups or as defined by individual meet policy. We hope this change clears up the MN age categories from the USAW category questions.

Welcome to the Weightlifting Blog!

The original plan for this page was entitled “Weightlifting Education”, but changing it to a blog format seems like it might be more useful to people.  Yes there will still be posts regarding learning about weightlifting related items, but it will also contain a more expanded version of the News & Announcements section of the main page.  And putting it into a blog format to be more familiar to readers, rather than a website with links to different topics.  All the information will be in one spot, and with the tags, it is search-able.  You can also subscribe to the blog, so new information gets sent right to you RSS reader.  My hope is that different coaches will be able to contribute to the information that is shared on the blog.  Again, as the technology improves, so can our website.
